Press Release

Indian Classical Dance Performances in Bulgaria  13-17 August, 2025

The Embassy of India, in collaboration with the East West Indological Foundation and with the active support of local municipalities, is organizing a series of Indian Classical Dance performances across Bulgaria from 13 to 17 August 2025. The performances will take place in the cities of Kyustendil, Sofia, Varna, and Burgas.

These events will feature one of India’s most renowned Odissi dance ensembles, led by Mrs. Arupa Gayatri Panda, acclaimed as one of the finest Odissi dancers of her generation. The group is being sponsored by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR)—a Government of India organization dedicated to promoting India’s cultural relations with the world through cultural exchange and artistic collaboration.

Odissi dance is one of the most celebrated forms of Indian classical dance, with its roots in the ancient temples of Odisha, in eastern India. Traditionally performed by women dancers known as Maharis, Odissi originated as a sacred offering to Lord Jagannath, the presiding deity of the region. The dance is distinguished by its lyrical grace, sensual expression, and deep emphasis on bhakti bhava—a spirit of devotional love towards the divine.
